The blooming city of Olivette

Olivette is a city in bloom, thanks to the carefully maintained gardens that dot the St. Louis suburb. The flowers in these gardens add pops of purple, gold and cream to Olivette’s parks and community centers; even when the weather turns cold, scarlet winterberries peak out from under clumps of snow. Residents may pass these gardens as they walk the close-packed community, strolling to the parks, plazas, eateries and schools dispersed among the town’s subdivisions.

With beautiful homes and a great school district, Olivette is everything you could want.

Continued home construction throughout Olivette

The city of Olivette was incorporated in 1930, but home construction continues to this day. As a result, home shoppers have options from 1950s ranch homes to recently constructed houses with contemporary designs. The median housing price is around $650,000.

Olivette is a competitive neighborhood for homebuyers anytime, but it’s “extraordinarily difficult” now given the inventory shortage that persists across St. Louis and the nation, says Coldwell Banker Realty Gundaker Sales Associate Corinna Foy. “No one will move because they can’t find another house.” The CAP Index crime score for Olivette is 4 out of 10, the same as the U.S. average.

Learning through the Ladue School District

The Ladue School District is ranked Missouri’s No. 1 school system by Niche, and Foy says that the schools pull many homebuyers to Olivette. Niche scores it an overall A-plus.

Most children start at Old Bonhomme Elementary School; the school originally opened in Olivette in the 1800s as the first brick schoolhouse in St. Louis County. Fifth graders get a school all to themselves: Ladue Fifth Grade Center, an A-plus-rated school 3 miles from Olivette. Starting in sixth grade, students head 3 miles outside Olivette to attend Ladue Middle, where students can hit the slopes through the ski club. Students also will head 3 miles outside Olivette to take classes at Ladue Horton Watkins High School. Ranked the best public high school in the state by Niche, Ladue Horton Watkins offers more than 20 Advanced Placement classes ranging from music theory to Spanish literature.

Olivette Diner has been a fixture since the 1960s

Sidewalks lead along Olive Boulevard, allowing for walks to the many restaurants and shops that hug the busy corridor. On Saturday and Sunday mornings, hungry locals line the counters at Olivette Diner, a town staple since it opened in the ‘60s. For dinner, people can pick up brisket or ribs from Sugarfire Smoke House, a regional chain born in Olivette after owner Mike Johnson took a tour of barbecue hotspots across the country. Schnucks, a regional grocery chain, is never more than 3.5 miles away.

The Olivette Diner has kept locals coming back for more since it first opened in 1966.

Exploring at Stacy Park

Though Stacy Park is surrounded by residential developments and corporate office buildings, it can transport Olivette residents to completely different environments. In addition to soccer fields and a playground, the park features dirt trails that slip through cloistered timbers and a 3-acre sea of grass and flowers that recreate the prairies that once covered a third of Missouri. One of five Olivette parks, Stacy Park also hosts two of the city’s gardens.

Mostly car-dependent, but relatively close to STL

Olivette is a mainly car-dependent area, with state Route 340 bisecting it. St. Louis is about 12 miles east and MetroBus run to and from downtown. The closest MetroLink train station is about 5 miles east. With the St. Louis Lambert International Airport less than 8 miles north, residents have access to air travel without having to drive into the city.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
