Owings is a suburban town with farming roots and beach access
Owings, Maryland is home to just under 2,500 people and is located between Dunkirk and Chesapeake Beach on the western side of the Chesapeake Bay. This small, semi-rural suburban town is known for its farm-fresh produce and exceptional schools. “This whole area used to be farmland,” says Gail Nyman, a realtor with RE/MAX who has over 40 years of experience in Maryland real estate. “Now, it still has bountiful farms, but also great schools, plenty of dining and shopping, and is all around a great place to call home.”

Local fishing spots and summer activity at the Chesapeake Bay
Outside of work and school, locals take advantage of Owings’ seasonal weather and enjoy the outdoors. Hutchins Pond is known locally as a great spot to fish for bass, catfish and bluegills. It is stocked with trout every spring by the state and has a sandy shore with bench seating perfect for picnicking. There’s also Ward Farm Recreation and Nature Park, open from dawn till dusk and offering a baseball field, fishing pier, hiking trails and playground. There are also public restrooms and a tot lot available. “In the summer, people head to North Beach and Chesapeake Beach, which are six or seven miles east of Owings,” says Nyman. “At the beach, there are tons of restaurants, outdoor concerts and public access to the water.” For rainy days, locals enjoy adventuring at Odyssey Axe Throw in nearby Huntingtown, where you can learn how to throw axes and shoot arrows.

Farming culture still thrives, from produce markets to wineries
In the fall, locals head to Swann Farms to pick their own pumpkins and top the day off at Fridays Creek Winery with a wine tasting. This winery is dog-friendly (except in the indoor tasting room) and offers event reservations for small to mid-size events. For dinner, try Pinky’s Eatery, a locally owned restaurant serving southern specials like fried chicken, collard greens and candied yams. Home cooks can head to nearby Dunkirk to a Harris Teeter, Walmart, Safeway and Giant Food for their weekly grocery runs. For local fruits and vegetables, Trott’s Fresh Farm Produce provides an outdoor produce market where local farmers sell their harvests. “It’s still country, even though the residential areas are suburban,” says Nyman. “You can get fresh corn on the cob and enjoy local produce for most of the year.”
