Desert neighborhood at the heart of Palm Springs
Palm Springs is well-known for its midcentury beautiful outdoor recreation and high-end shopping and dining. For those who want unlimited access to the latter, there’s no better place to call home than Downtown Palm Springs. “The appeal of being downtown is that you’re close to shops and restaurants,” says Greg Tormo, a Realtor with the Paul Kaplan Group who has sold several homes in the city. “It’s a vibrant area with lots of things to do. If you want to go to great restaurants or walk through shops, that’s where it all is.” Downtown Palm Springs is centered around Palm Canyon Drive and Indian Canyon Drive, each running north to south through the city. A mix of midcentury modern and Spanish-style buildings line the streets, housing local stores, popular eateries and bars serving the latest trend in craft cocktails. Life in Downtown Palm Springs allows residents to explore everything the commercial district offers just steps from their home.

High-end shops and restaurants a short walk away
Downtown Palm Springs is a relatively small neighborhood, making it easy for residents to walk along the palm tree-lined streets to get to the commercial area on the main roads. There are so many restaurants in the community that it can be hard to pick where to eat, but Tormo has a few recommendations. “I love Melvyn’s, which is west of Palm Canyon Drive and is sort of a classic old-school restaurant. Right downtown, there’s a place called Johannes that is a good German restaurant. The Rooster and The Pig is a great restaurant,” he says. Melvyn’s is in the Inglewood Estate hotel on Ramon Drive. This upscale American restaurant has hosted diners such as Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra. Residents often dress up and head here for cocktails and a steak dinner. Johannes is a bright eatery popular for its schnitzel, while Rooster and The Pig serves Vietnamese fare in a rustic, open setting. Shopping in the neighborhood includes La Plaza, an outdoor mall with home goods stores, gift shops and jewelers. The area also has a few national retailers, like Tommy Bahama, H&M and Pandora Jewelry. Gourmet groceries are available at On The Mark, a small local store popular for its wine and charcuterie items. For a full shopping trip, residents can visit Grocery Outlet on Palm Canyon Drive or Ralphs, about 1 mile east of the neighborhood on Sunrise Way.
