Historic neighborhood between San Pablo Bay and Interstate 80
Old Town Pinole is a residential neighborhood overlooking the San Pablo Bay. Nineteenth-century homes and buildings preserved from the area’s history of railway shipping center the neighborhood. A population boom after the 1950s produced sections of mid- to late-century homes, condos and apartment buildings, and shopping and dining options line the San Pablo Avenue thoroughfare, which dissects the neighborhood. On Old Town Pinole’s eastern border, Interstate 80 connects the neighborhood to Richmond and other Bay Area cities. “It’s a very quaint bedroom community right off the freeway with easy access to schools, shops, and anywhere you need to go,” says Gwendolyn Woods, a Realtor with Bridgeway Realty who specializes in the East Bay area. “In this crazy Bay Area traffic, access is worth its weight in gold. Pinole is one of the top areas I recommend to families because of that access.”

Homes showcase Pinole’s history
The waterfront area and the San Pablo historic district are within walking distance of most of the neighborhood, with sidewalks easing the way. Pockets of mid-century homes, late 1980s townhomes and condos, and apartment buildings feature a range of styles. Some nod to the Queen Ann and Victorian styles of the neighborhood’s historic homes. Some are Spanish-inspired with stucco exteriors. A number are mid-century modern with brick accents. Neatly landscaped yards are full of greenery. There are the occasional palm and pine trees, but mostly tall oaks are found throughout the residential areas. Prices range from $525,000 to $900,000 for single-family homes, most of which have three or four bedrooms. A section of 1980s townhomes with three and four bedrooms sit close to the waterfront; they run from $650,000 to $776,000. Nearby condos run from $475,000 for two-bedroom units to $560,000 for those with three bedrooms.

San Francisco Bay Trail for hiking, biking and taking in the views
Bayfront Park on the waterfront of Old Town Pinole is a natural draw for recreation. A paved portion of the San Francisco Bay Trail runs through it, offering views of the open bay and the marshlands. Freight trains rumble through on the historic bayside tracks. The oft-photographed 1894 Bernardo Fernandez mansion with its signature cupola overlooks the park, displaying a unique look that borrows from Queen Anne, Second Empire and Italianate styles. Fernandez Park in the historic district features playgrounds, sports fields and picnic areas. It hosts movie nights and concerts during the summer and brings in the community for Juneteenth and Pride celebrations. Plus, it holds a classic car show every June. The Pinole Creek Trail provides about a half mile of easy hiking or dog walking from downtown to the bay.

A mix of longtime local favorites and newer eateries and shops line San Pablo Avenue. Bear Claw Bakery and Café is owned by a family that traces its origins to 1912, with customers that have been coming in since they were kids. Tina’s Place features brunch and happy hour specials. “Tina’s has always been there; it’s a community staple. It’s a great little spot for cocktails in the evening,” says Woods. Nearby Pear Street Bistro serves steaks and crusted catfish. On Saturdays, area farmers bring their produce to the Pinole Farmer’s Market in Old Town. “Old Town Pinole has one of the best farmers’ markets around,” says Woods. “People come from far and wide.” Another shopping district in the southern corner of the neighborhood includes AMF Pinole Valley Lanes bowling, Starbucks, Habit Burger & Grill and Sprouts Farmers Market for specialty groceries. Trader Joe’s is just across I-80, and Target is 2.5 miles to the west.
