Sandhill Crossing
Wetland neighborhood with old Florida charm
Many listings in Sandhill Crossing offer access to the Indian River or one of the many creeks that run through the community. Some listings belong to planned communities, like Spanish Lakes Golf Village, a 55+ mobile-home community, but many exist independently. Sandhill Crossing preserves old Florida charm with lush green lawns, palm trees, tile roofs and brightly colored homes. Most listings here are mobile homes or bungalows, though some larger, often Spanish-influenced luxury estates occasionally hit the market. The median sales price here is about $315,000. Mobile homes go for under $100,000, and prices get as high as $3 million for custom-built luxury estates. Sandhill Crossing contains two nature preserves, Savannas Preserve State Park and Walton Scrub Preserve, and three city parks, Elk's Park Recreation Area, Rotary Park and Woodstork Trail Neighborhood Park. Savannas Preserve State Park is largely undeveloped land that takes up most of the eastern half of Sandhill Crossing. It preserves an all-natural Florida that resembles what early pioneers would have seen. The park's wetlands are popular for fishing, kayaking and canoeing, and the park contains over 17 miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Rangers here also host guided walks and canoe trips. The Walton Scrub Preserve borders the Indian River Lagoon and contains many threatened and endangered plant species that only exist in this scrub. Its half-mile self-guided interpretive trail allows visitors to explore the ecosystem at their own pace. City parks like Elk's Park Recreation Area and Rotary Parks are great spots to find playgrounds and picnic tables, and Woodstork Trail Neighborhood Park contains Hillmoor Lake, which has a 1.27-mile trail for hiking and biking around it, as well as fitness stations and spots for shoreline fishing. The closest beach to Sandhill Crossing is Jensen Beach Park, just across the Indian River. Locals love how quiet, well-maintained and not crowded this public beach is. They like the free parking close to the beach, lifeguards on duty, chairs available for rental and the best sunset views in town.
