Coastal Maine architecture in Cumberland Foreside
While Cumberland Foreside’s inland cul-de-sacs have the occasional late 19th-century gambrel farmhouse, most dwellings weren’t built until the 1970s. Four-to-five-bedroom Colonial Revivals sit on 1-acre lots, often filled with periwinkle hydrangea bushes and eastern white pine and hemlock trees. Asphalt driveways lead to two-car garages alongside rambling Cape Cod cottages. Shingle-style houses may face the bay’s craggy shoreline, while contemporary-style dwellings sometimes back up to private beaches and wooden fishing piers. Inland homes can cost between $675,000 and $900,000, while properties closer to the water usually sell anywhere between $1 million and $5 million. Despite the neighborhood’s beach access, Conroy says mainly full-time residents live here. “There isn’t a renting market, and people will live here through the winter, so there’s really never tourists or any sort of busy season.”Broad Cove Reserve is a quiet beach in Cumberland Foreside
A short walk down a steep boardwalk path leads to the Broad Cove Reserve shoreline, covered in broken seashells and driftwood. “Because Cumberland Foreside is primarily residential, the beach is incredibly quiet and almost never busy, even during the summer,” says Conroy. As beachgoers swim from May through June, they may see horseshoe crabs laying eggs. Kayak storage racks sit at the end of the wooden fishing pier, where anglers can catch striped bass and haddock. Locals must enter a lottery with the Cumberland Community Recreation Department to get a paddleboat storage spot at the beach. Spears Hill Trail is a mile-and-a-half-long and shaded by red pine and spruce trees. Hikers, snowshoers and bike riders will also pass fields of maidenhair ferns and wildflower patches with oxeye daisies and purple geraniums as they trek the dirt path.High grades for the Cumberland-North Yarmouth School District
Children here can attend kindergarten through third grade at Mabel I. Wilson School, graded a B-plus by Niche. Greely Middle School has one school for fourth- and fifth-grade students, then another for sixth through eighth-grade students, though they all study on the same campus. Greely earns an A-minus. Students may continue to B-rated Greely High School, which offers Advanced Placement classes like French, macroeconomics and studio art.Roller coasters and cattle competitions at the Cumberland Fair
During the last weekend of September, Ferris wheels, funnel cake stands and petting zoos fill the Cumberland Fairgrounds, 7 miles west of the neighborhood. Established in 1869, the Cumberland Fair includes rural events like rodeos, harness racing and pumpkin weighing competitions. Visitors can also ride rollercoasters or square dance as country bands play on the main stage.Numerous routes to downtown Portland
Though locals can walk to the beach, Cumberland Foreside doesn’t have sidewalks or public transportation options, making it a car-dependent community. An 8-mile drive south on Interstate 295, Maine Route 88 or U.S. Route 1 reaches downtown Portland. A 2-mile trip north leads to the Chebeague Transportation Company, providing daily ferry rides between Chebeague Island and Cousins Island. Portland International Jetport, 15 miles away, is the closest airport, while MainHealth is the nearest hospital, less than 10 miles away in downtown Portland.Grocery stores and locally owned restaurants are along U.S. Route 1
Big-box retailers and locally owned restaurants are 2 miles south of the neighborhood in Falmouth’s shopping corridor off U.S. Route 1. Locals can grab groceries from Shaw’s or the Walmart Supercenter. The parking lot behind Walmart is filled with produce tents and other local food vendors for the Falmouth Summer Market, held every Wednesday between the end of May and October. Black leather bar stools line the counter at Bernie’s Foreside, a breakfast spot known for fresh bagels and bottomless coffee. String lights and beer-branded umbrellas cover the stone patio outside Foreside Tavern & Side Bar, where patrons can enjoy freshly caught seafood dishes and specialty cocktails.Sailing and golf hubs near Cumberland Foreside
Established in 1968, the Portland Yacht Club is the closest marina, about 2 miles south of Cumberland Foreside. A blue shingle-style clubhouse sits in front of sailboats, catamarans and center console boats, all tied to moorings. From the Pilot Regatta in June to The Monhegan Island Race every August, the club hosts several sailing competitions, with many routes passing by Cumberland Foreside. Besides spending a day boating, Conroy says golfing is another popular activity for residents. “When people aren’t on the water, they’re probably golfing because some great courses are nearby.” The Portland Country Club, less than 5 miles east, has an 18-hole Donald Ross-designed course overlooking the bay, while Val Halla Golf & Recreation is a public option, just 5 miles to the north.
