This extraordinary home combines all elements desirable to create a perfect Coastal Retreat. It begins with the owners' selection of the home site in the exclusive controlled access neighborhood of Watersound. (The husband has been coming to this beach since birth and knows 30-A.) The southern elevation takes maximum advantage of the amazing vistas of the Gulf of Mexico, pristine crystal white dunes, and the rare coastal dune lake to the east. The northern elevation faces a quiet open park providing additional privacy. With their vision and insight, they gathered talented professionals to create this intricately designed home. Scott Merrill and David Colgan of Merrill, Pastor, and Colgan, were engaged to design the 3,985 square foot home. Scott has received the ICAA Ross Award, the Seaside Prize, and two national AIA awards for the Chapel and the Honeymoon Cottages located in Seaside, Florida, the well-known community recognized for the development and application of New Urbanism. Cheryl Troxel, an artist and architect in near-by Santa Rosa Beach, and Georgina O'Hara from Houston were selected to create the sophisticated palette of the interior environment. The mantra for the entire collaboration was "attention to detail", and it is evident everywhere one looks. This intense attention to detail is evident immediately as you enter between the two single car garages, creating a fern-lined path to the front entrance courtyard, decked with ipe wood and installed with invisible (biscuit) attachments. The courtyard provides a quiet gathering space with an informal dining table and chairs from Janus et Cie and a Lynx Grill for outdoor cooking. You will appreciate the pure symmetry reflected in the design throughout the structure. The traditional shingle exterior reflects the architectural flavor of Nantucket and the Hamptons and leads to an interior embracing a contemporary aesthetic described also as modern classicism. The attention to detail will be recognized by the exclusive materials, designer furnishings, state-of-the-art appliances and fixtures used which are the highest quality and most prestigious and desirable finishes available. The seamless integration of superior materials and workmanship illustrates again the attention to detail embraced by the talented team which created 118 Tidal Bridge Way. You enter this serene space immediately realizing it is a meditative environment providing peace and tranquility. As you enter you find subtly-colored Waterworks concrete terrazzo with the scale reduced from 18 x 18 squares in the foyer to 12 x 12 squares in smaller spaces throughout the first floor which includes three bedrooms - each with a private bath. The downstairs master bedroom has a bed by Flou and round Poliform side tables; the large fitted closet is also by Poliform. This bedroom has a marvelously private spacious porch with Dedon furniture. From the foyer, your eyes are drawn upward through the multistoried foyer to the large Fontana Arte Globes which are hanging works of art, lighting your way. The precision craftsmanship displayed by the wood paneling wraps the rooms and ceiling with a welcoming solidity. The entrance sconces in the foyer are Artemide, the blue leather sofa is by Sir Norman Foster, the walnut console table is BDDW, an amazing furniture maker. All bathroom fixtures are Dornbracht, all glass tiles Waterworks, and the bathroom countertops are Okite. In the first floor laundry room are stainless steel Miele washer and dryer, and also a drawer which pulls out to make an ironing board. Outside the laundry room is a shower with custom teak drain providing easy access to the house after a trip to the beach.
You may climb the comfortable stairs wrapped by a custom stainless steel banister with oak handrail or take the elevator which is paneled to complement the home's interior wall detail. The elevator traverses all three floors making delivery of luggage and groceries an easy process. Awaiting you on the second floor is the expansive southern over-sized window wall providing an entrancing artistic trilogy: the lake, the dunes, and the blue green waters of the Gulf. It is mesmerizing. The living and dining area are anchored on the east end with a ventless fireplace with a beautiful Brazilian Tiger's eye marble surround. The second floor 11x34 deck (with comfortable Janus and Dedon furniture), doubles the living space and provides access to the breezes and the soothing sounds of the water. You have arrived. You can rest. You can contemplate. The second floor with its cool clean planking of quarter sawn oak is the ultimate living space and includes the fully-equipped Poggenpohl/Miele kitchen. The upper cabinets and free-standing cabinet are made of a synthetic teak. The Miele refrigerator/freezer is 36+18 inch size. The four Miele ovens include two convection ovens, one speed oven, and one steam oven. The backsplash is Ann Sacks tile, and the fixtures are Dornbracht with Okite countertops. The wine storage and ice maker are Sub-zero. The breakfast table is Alias. The porch off the kitchen provides a cozy place for coffee and a view of the park and is also accessible from the media room. The dining table is by BDDW and is oxidized maple. Dining chairs and cocktail table are Italian from Scott+Cooner. All the curtains were custom designed by Curtain Exchange. The console table is de Stijl by Holly Hunt. The area rugs in the living area and media room are both Tufenkian. In the media room is a Jasper Morrison moon light and a Porro enameled TV cabinet and a Cassina sofa with ottomans. The Loewen high impact windows have shades controlled by the LUTRON Homeworks system which also controls all the lighting. The house is also wired for audio with LINN Classik receivers and LINN keypads and speakers in the two master bedrooms, the living room, the kitchen, one guest bedroom, the second floor porch, and the entrance deck (mounted on the garages).
The third floor master suite is a unique space within this coastal retreat. It provides all of the comforts plus the incredible view, giving the opportunity to catch the easterly sunrises as you wake to start your day. Another Miele laundry room with pocket doors to close off makes your personal laundry an easy task. A wet bar for coffee and drinks with a TV nook with another BDDW cabinet provides a space to start or end your day. Artemide sconces, Artemide lighted mirrors, with his/hers fitted Poliform closets again reflect the symmetry you find throughout the house. His and her bathrooms are the ultimate luxury with custom teak cabinetry. His with a large walk-in shower and Hers with a Kohler Tea-for-Two soaking tub. Both private suites have radiant floors. The Master bedroom has a sitting area with built-in bookcases and Portofino swivel chairs and ottoman for endless views toward the Gulf. Tolmeo sconces by beds and bookcase provide ambient lighting. Another BDDW cabinet houses the stereo equipment. You are surrounded by quality workmanship; one astute observer stated: "It doesn't just happen."
There are additional engineering and maintenance highlights including the security system and a water leak alarm/cut-off. The three thermostats for each floor's HVAC are in closets with temperature sensors on the walls to activate the geothermal HVAC. A four foot basement provides easy access to all of the mechanical systems. Basements are a rare find in our area.
There is not another house on 30-A with this unusual combination of attributes: superb view and superb finish-out. It will be appreciated by all who enter. If you are looking for a special place along the 30A corridor look no further. This is it.
