Singing Cedars Cottage was constructed by Professor Lawrence Hill of Ithica College in Orwell Vermont in 1935 for his wife and him. Professor Hill was a pioneer in Physical Education. He erected Singing Cedars camp for young adult college athletes in Orwell in the 1920s. In alternating sessions young woman and men would practice their sport on the shores of Lake Champlain. He was an advocate of “fresh air and physical activity”. The name Singing Cedars comes from the sound that the trees make when they rub together, and it makes it sound like they are singing.
