Montclair, a sought-after Boston suburb
Montclair is as close to Boston as Quincy gets. This residential neighborhood hugs the south side of the Neponset River across from the Boston neighborhood of Dorchester. Residents enjoy access to outdoor amenities along the river and a plethora of diverse culinary options within walking distance. Commuters appreciate the neighborhood's plentiful access to public transportation options, including a train that takes them to Boston. "People are drawn to the convenience of Montclair because of the train stations and supermarkets," says Yong Tan, a Realtor with Central Real Estate who sells houses in the neighborhood. Homes are valued highly because of the proximity to Boston and the waterfront.

Condos and single-family homes
The neighborhood offers single-family homes and condos built primarily between the turn of the 20th century and the 1970s. Homebuyers will find typical 20th-century New England-style properties, like 1940s Cape Cods with dormer windows and raised ranch-style homes with brick facades. One-bedroom 1970s condos sell for between $290,000 and $380,000, and two-bedroom newly built condos sell for around $700,000. Homebuyers can purchase a three-bedroom 1940s single-family home for between $550,000 and $770,000. Assessors value four-bedroom houses from the 1910s and 20s at between $660,000 and $950,000. "People tend to stay for a long time. The turnover isn't high," Tan says.

Highly rated public schools
Children can walk to Montclair Elementary, which has a 13-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Atlantic Middle School students are 42% proficient in math and 48% in reading. Both schools have B-plus Niche ratings. Teens often move on to the A Niche-rated North Quincy High School, which has a 95% graduation rate and offers 22 Advanced Placement classes. In 2023, nearly half a dozen North Quincy seniors received the Massachusetts Seal of Biliteracy for proficiency in English and at least one other language.

Greenspaces within walking distance
Residents travel 1 ½ miles northeast to walk the promenade and relax on the sands of Wollaston Beach overlooking Quincy Bay. The 36-hole Presidents Golf Course is based within the community. After a round, visitors enjoy beer and burgers at the course's The View Restaurant & Tavern. The Welcome Young Playground on the neighborhood's eastern border features two basketball courts, a children's tot-lot, two tennis courts and a softball field. Within the neighborhood, residents play baseball at Bishop Field and use the nearby tennis courts. Residents fish for largemouth bass, bluegill and perch in the Neponset River. The 2-mile Quincy RiverWalk ends in Montclair, near the Best Western Adams Inn Quincy-Boston. From the RiverWalk, pedestrians can use the sidewalk on the Neponset Avenue Bridge into Dorchester, where they can visit Pope John Paul II Park for a picnic. If they'd rather stay in Quincy, they can take the path to Marina Bay and launch a canoe or kayak.

Close to entertainment in Boston
Residents drive 5 miles south to catch new film releases at the AMC in Braintree. "There isn't much entertainment. People have to head to Boston for entertainment," Tan says. Residents drive to the big city to root for professional teams like the Celtics, the Bruins and the Red Sox. Boston is also home to the Museum of African American History, the Museum of Fine Arts and the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library. Folks can catch comedians like Bill Burr, Joe Pera and Kumail Nanjiani at Boston's Wilbur Theater.

Getting around Greater Boston
Residents catch the subway at the North Quincy station on Hancock Street. It takes residents to Downtown Boston in roughly 45 minutes. Residents can also drive 8 miles north to Downtown Boston via Interstate 93. Montclair streets are lined with sidewalks, making it easy for residents to get to restaurants on foot. There are public bus stops along West Squantum Street, Granite Avenue and the Newport Avenue Extension.
