Katie grew up in a construction and real estate family with her grandfather starting Horan & Company in 1948. The construction division was purchased by her mother and father in 1993 and named Horan Construction, Inc. Katie grew up helping her dad on the job sites on the weekend and her mom in the office on school holidays and breaks, which provided Katie insight into the operations and processes on the job sites (aka in the field) as well as how those effect operations within the office. Katie would often help with the construction and real estate side of operations, with Katie’s first real estate transaction at the age of 15.
Katie graduated from the University of Iowa in 2001 with a BS in Computer Science and went to work for Accenture Technology Labs in Chicago. She worked all over the world in places such as Hong Kong, China, Amsterdam, and London, to name a few. Katie left Accenture in 2005 to go to work for a tech startup called Endeca. During this timeframe, Katie also obtained her Master's Degree in Computer Information Systems. Then in 2007, Katie and her husband, Charles, decided to come home to Peoria to take over the family construction business. In 2015, Katie left the family business to relaunch The Kim Group, which she and her husband started in 2004.
