About Lana Hien
While Lana considers herself a San Jose native and others view her that same way, she actually came to the U.S. as a toddler. A Vietnam refugee and a first-generation immigrant, she represented more to her family than she could recognize or appreciate at such an early age: escape, freedom, and opportunity.
As Lana grew older, she was better able to appreciate what her family had done for her, and she traveled back to Vietnam to see ways that she could help the community that she had come from. Villages populate the area, and many of the villages were built around rivers. In many cases, the only way to get across the rivers is to swim or travel by boat. It can be incredibly dangerous, especially for children as they can’t be seen from boats. This had personally affected her own family as a cousin of hers, who had been swimming across one of these rivers to meet her mother, was tragically run over by a boat.
Lana began to look for ways that she could help this community, and she discovered a non-profit that her family and she were eager to join. They were able to travel to Vietnam and help this organization build bridges, putting an end to the treacherous swims. She smiled to herself as she watched a small group of children running across the bridge, getting from one end to the other in safety.
That community spirit is something Lana feels even more strongly about in San Jose. She’s first in her family to graduate college, start multiple businesses as a female, and proud to start the first non-profit Vietnamese association of realtors, she volunteers her time to help the community in yearly hunger events and escalating the education of her peers. Along with her husband, Rich, she always strives to bring families safety, comfort, and well-being. She’d love the chance to do the same for you.
