About Peter
Peter is a real estate professional with eight plus years of knowledge and experience. He began his career in 2016 with the purchase of his first home, a duplex that doubled as an investment property. Continuing his entrepreneurial interest in real estate, he began working with investors to acquire properties that uniquely fit their objectives and portfolios. This work equipped him with a toolkit to identify and analyze properties with unique potential, and deal with the elements of complex transactions such as tangled titles, difficult negotiations with banks and municipal departments, creative financing, and drafting terms to satisfy special needs on both sides of the table.
As he continued to build in his career, friends and family came to him for counseling and advice, eventually nudging him to represent them in their residential transactions. Bringing his unique eye and experience, he was able to overcome obstacles, excel in negotiations, and help those around him gracefully accomplish their goals. In doing so, Peter found the human dimension of residential real estate to be a wellspring of pride and accomplishment - helping people successfully sell or buy their home with the highest degree of professionalism and least amount of stress.
Peter was born in Philadelphia, grew up in Swarthmore, and thrived on the many special gems our area offers: apple picking at Lynvilla Orchards, the wooden slide at Smith Playground, trips to the art museum, and summers at the Jersey shore. He now shares these foundational joys with his own children from their home near Clark Park in West Philadelphia.
Peter attended Swarthmore schools, graduated from Episcopal Academy, and received his B.A. in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Vermont. Although he then lived and studied in Indonesia, the Peruvian Amazon, Northern California and Oregon, he always gravitated back to the places and people that helped construct his concept of “home.”
He is proud to say that Compass now also points his way home, and through its company resources, technologies, and most importantly its people, he is better equipped than ever to deliver consistent and tangible value to those he represents. Whether they involve residential or investment-specific real estate, Peter van der Vlugt approaches his clients' needs with experience, empathy, and the creative joy that comes only from finding the overlay of what you excel at and what you truly love to do.
