Most homes were built between 1900 and 1930. “Even though the homes have, for the most part, all been updated, their original character, everything that makes them unique, is the same,” Dobler says. American Foursquares are the most common, and you can also find Cape Cods, Colonial Revivals and Craftsman bungalows. Many homes have driveways, and some have detached garages. Parking is available on most streets. “It’s so close to everything, and people like the lot sizes and the sizes of the houses,” says Joan Peaslee, who lives nearby and is a real estate agent with Shaheen, Ruth, Martin & Fonville Real Estate. There are also apartment complexes along Chamberlayne and Laburnum avenues.

Downtown Richmond and VCU are both around 10 minutes away. Chamberlayne Avenue leads straight to VCU, and you can get downtown by taking Chamberlayne Avenue to Interstate 95. The Greater Richmond Transit Company bus stops on Chamberlayne and Laburnum avenues, and bike lanes on Brook Road lead to Virginia Union and Bellevue. The city is planning to build a new route of its bus rapid transit line, The Pulse, along the Chamberlayne corridor, which will create a quicker bus trip to downtown, VCU and locations south of the river.

Neighbors can gather at porch parties or submit their best recipe to the annual chili cook-off. The Ginter Park Show is an arts and crafts market that’s been a holiday staple for over 20 years. The community is also welcoming to four-legged residents. “It’s a very dog-friendly neighborhood,” says Dobler. “There are big back yards and almost all of them have privacy fences, and there are always people out walking their dogs,” she says.

Depending on where you live, you might be able to walk to shops and restaurants.
