Community without curbs on City of Roanoke’s westernmost edge
On the westernmost edge of the City of Roanoke sits Greater Deyerle. Locals like the area for its rural character – the Blue Ridge Mountains are visible from every angle, brush sways in valley wind and many residential roads don’t have sidewalks or curbs. Grass sprawling and sloped lawns touch curved and cracked two-lane roads, and small lakes and streams flow throughout the area. The neighborhood’s population has shifted over the last 50 years as it has transitioned from a sparse rural neighborhood to a suburban community with about 3,800 residents surrounded by commercial development. The Greater Deyerle Neighborhood Association
The Greater Deyerle Neighborhood Association oversees the neighborhood, governing housing and traffic, economic development and environmental quality. They hold quarterly meetings and send out a quarterly newsletter, delivered to residents by their area captain—a spokesperson for different parts of the neighborhood who holds smaller meetings with their section of the community when necessary.

Post-war housing in a rural setting
Greater Deyerle began as a rural community. “Over time, the city has expanded towards the county,” Avis explains. “They’ve taken old farms and cut them up into neighborhoods.” Suburban development boomed after World War II, with almost 92% of the neighborhood’s structures built after 1945 and the greatest development occurring during the 1950s. Over half of the neighborhood’s homes are single-story, but there are also a few Colonial Revival and split-level houses throughout the area. Most properties were constructed between 1950 and 1975. The neighborhood maintains its rural feel, with homes on large lots and sloping landscapes. Most residential streets lack shoulders, curbs, gutters or sidewalks and end in cul-de-sacs or have dead ends. Potential homebuyers can find a single-family home in Greater Deyerle for between $250,000 and $700,000, depending on the size, age and condition of the property. Some condos and townhouses are also available, with prices around $250,000. There are also five apartment complexes and a retirement facility – Brandon Oaks – in the neighborhood.

Easy access to Electric Road
Aside from the buses that run along Brandon Avenue, Greater Deyerle is largely car-dependent, even on residential roads, most of which lack curbs. Two-lane Mud Lick Road is the neighborhood’s main arterial street. It connects two of Roanoke’s main thoroughfares, Brandon Avenue and Grandin Road. On the neighborhood’s western border, the four-lane Electric Road divides the City of Roanoke and Roanoke County. This is Roanoke’s closest thing to a beltway, forming a semicircle from north to south around the City’s western edge. In case of emergency, Greater Deyerle borders LewisGale Medical Center. And when it’s time to fly, the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport is about 7 miles north.

Roanoke City Public Schools
The neighborhood is zoned for Roanoke City Public Schools. Students can attend Grandin Court Elementary School, which receives an A-minus from Niche, before Woodrow Wilson Middle School, which gets a C-plus. They can finish their public education at Patrick Henry High School, which Niche grades a B. Patrick Henry offers Dual Enrollment with Virginia Western Community College. Avis claims, “Virginia Western College is one of the better community colleges out there, which is huge for Roanoke and its students.”
Woodrow Wilson Middle School sits next to Raleigh Court Park.
Patrick Henry High School serves grades 9-12.

Garden City Park, Hidden Valley Country Club and Skate Center of Roanoke Valley
No sprawling public parks exist in Greater Deyerle, but Avis notes that Roanoke teems with outdoor opportunities within the area and in the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. Golfers can hit the links at nearby Hidden Valley Country Club, which also has tennis courts, swimming pools and a restaurant. For some indoor activity, the Skate Center of Roanoke Valley offers family-friendly fun. With roller skating, laser tag game rooms and game rooms, this is a great place for birthday parties and celebrations.

Shopping and dining along Electric Road and Brandon Avenue
Along Electric Road, locals can grocery shop at Food Lion or eat out at various sit-down and fast-casual restaurants. They can get morning coffee from Starbucks or Dunkin’ or have a nice meal at Ichiban Japanese Steakhouse. Brandon Avenue is another place with various services, including Mama Jean’s Barbecue, which is more akin to a food truck than a typical eatery. Still, there’s always a line. Los Arcos, the neighborhood’s Mexican restaurant, is another go-to for a quick lunch or dinner.
