Little Italy in San Diego is a vibrant, walkable neighborhood situated on North San Diego Bay and bordered by Interstate 5 to the east. Known for its Italian eateries and independent shops, the area features vivid murals, mosaic sculptures, and six outdoor piazzas that attract both tourists and locals. The neighborhood's history dates back to the early 1900s with Italian and Portuguese immigrants who established San Diego's tuna industry. Today, Little Italy spans 48 square blocks and is the largest "Little Italy" enclave in the country. Residents enjoy the twice-weekly Mercato farmers market, biking along the bayfront, and dining at popular restaurants like Nonna + Zucchero, Landini's Pizzeria, and Mona Lisa Italian Foods. Kettner Boulevard, known as Top Chef Alley, features eateries from former "Top Chef" competitors, including The Crack Shack and Herb & Wood. The Waterfront Bar and Grill, San Diego's oldest tavern, is also located here. The Piazza della Famiglia connects India and Columbia streets and hosts concerts and the farmers market. Mayor Todd Gloria has proposed increasing shelter capacity to address homelessness.
