Despite being over 110 years old and home to some of San Diego’s protected local landmarks, Burlingame stays young thanks to the trendy boutiques, breweries and coffee shops on 30th Street. Set just east of San Diego's iconic Balboa Park, the historic Burlingame neighborhood (developed in 1912) offers 10 blocks of early-century homes. Some of the largest Craftsman homes in San Diego
In addition to being a protected historic district, some stand-out features of this neighborhood are the light pink sidewalks and mature eucalyptus trees – developers in the 1900s wanted the sidewalks to be a defining quality here. Along the pastel pathways, Tudor, Prairie and Spanish Colonial Revival homes sit on grassy lots; some homes blend several styles together. A two-bedroom home in Burlingame can go for between $500,000 and $700,000 while a four-bedroom goes for between $1.2 and $1.5 million. “Burlingame is famous for having some of the largest, oldest Craftsman style homes in San Diego,” Felicia Gamez-Weinbaum, owner of FW4Homes, a local San Diego brokerage. “Their authentic vintage charm can’t be duplicated.” These Craftsman bungalows were built anywhere from the 1910s to the 1920s and range in price between $1.2 and $2.5 million.

One of the oldest schools in California
Public-school students can start out at McKinley Elementary, which earns an overall A from Niche, then advance to the B-rated Roosevelt International Middle School. Ninth through 12th graders can move on to the B-minus rated San Diego High School. Opened in 1882, San Diego High is one of the oldest schools in the state. The high school offers more than 70 clubs and societies, including the Badminton club, Girls Lacrosse and Surfrider club. The Spanish Revival style St. Augustine High School earns an A, offering a private, all-male high school option.

Minutes from historic Balboa Park
Residents can retreat from their backyards into miles of trails within Switzer Canyon that carve through thick trees, chaparral shrubs and seasonal blooms. Proposals were floated in the ‘80s for developing this natural space, but thanks to efforts of the Burlingame Homeowners Association, the city of San Diego purchased it and established it as an open space preserve in 1987. The 1,200-acre Balboa Park, established in 1868, is a historic cultural district where residents can catch live plays, visit museums or even visit the iconic San Diego Zoo. Science buffs enjoy the Fleet Science Center and art lovers can spontaneously frequent the San Diego Museum of Art. Locals can access the park on foot or by tram.

30th Street offers dive bars, dining and locally owned shops
30th Street runs north-south along Burlingame’s western border, lined with more than 70 independently owned shops, boutiques and craft breweries or “microbreweries”. Most of the shopping and dining is concentrated on the northern end of 30th street. Residents can stop in at Poor House Brewing Company, set about 2 miles away in North Park, or Fall Brewing Company’s taproom to sample any of their 18+ beers on draft. Residents can support local businesses by shopping at independently owned stores like Plum Pottery and Emerald & Ivy Plant Boutique, set on the same block at the southwest corner of the neighborhood. For groceries, there’s a Target a half a mile away on Grape Street. Burlingame residents can bike or walk to Food Bowl on Cedar Street, but many opt to drive 3 miles away to Sprouts Farmers Market on Park Boulevard for the organic options. For a cozy breakfast, Café Madeline is a French coffee shop that serves up fresh crepes, quiche and dark chocolate espresso.

B Street leads to Downtown
Burlingame is only about 2 miles east of Downtown San Diego, which residents can reach by way of B Street or taking a Metropolitan Transit System bus; there’s a stop on 30th and Juniper Street. The 805 is east of the neighborhood, the nearest entrance is 5 miles away. The 5 is southwest of the neighborhood, the nearest entrance 4 miles away. Residents can head north on the 805 or the 5 to get to South Mission Beach. Scripps Mercy Hospital is about 5 miles north, just off Washington Street, while The San Diego International Airport is 5 miles way.
