Planting new life into Southeast San Diego
Set approximately 10 miles southeast from the heart of San Diego, Paradise Hills is a well-established community-in-progress. "The neighborhood has been here since the 1950s," says Derek Barksdale, Chula Vista-based Realtor with Military Mutual. "It's been a positive thing that younger people, some of whom are inheriting these homes, are moving in and renovating houses that looked like they were on their last legs before." Not only are they improving their new properties, but their shared landscape. In 2017, a group of locals formed Paradise Gardeners, launching their Native Garden (previously a covered landfill) at the community park. Plans for this community project include rustic log benches, a pollinator area and an ethnobotany garden that will educate visitors about the indigenous Kumeyaay Nation that lived in and traveled through the area long ago.
Paradise Hill's native garden is a beautiful place to stroll and take in the native Poppies.
