Two miles from the San Francisco Bay, Portola is a small neighborhood tucked between 313-acre McLaren Park and California State Route 101 with a friendly atmosphere. “People tend to look out for each other there,” says Kriss Miranda, a Realtor with EXP Realty who’s been selling real estate since 2002. “Because it’s a family-oriented nook of the city.” Doelger-style homes line the hilly streets and the shops and restaurants along San Bruno Ave. provide a vibrant dining scene, especially for Asian cuisine.

Most homes in Portola are Doelger-style, common all over San Francisco. These homes are defined by first-floor garages with adjoined living spaces and a second-story with bedrooms and a kitchen. Houses in Portola are generally attached to each other, but the neighborhood does have the occasional detached home on a mid-sized lot. Homes in Portola sell for between $950,000 and $1.7 million. The homes come in a few different flavors here, from Spanish Colonial Revival and art deco to Mediterranean-revival.
Shops, restaurants and a flower shop along San Bruno Avenue
San Bruno Avenue hosts Portola’s walkable dining district. It’s especially known for restaurants like Banh Mi House, Pho Nation and Imperial Garden Seafood. This dining strip is popular for anyone looking to eat dim sum, pho, or banh mi. “[Portola has] some of the best Asian restaurants at this end of the city,” says longtime San Francisco resident David Lytle. Diners can also head to Jim Georgie’s Donuts, the go-to spot for sweet treats and Hey Neighbor Café is open early for busy San Franciscans looking for their caffeine fix. San Bruno Avenue is also home to flowery spots like The Botany Shop, nail salons and beauty supply stores. For groceries, residents can head to independent grocers Foothill Market and Oxbridge Market or drive two miles to Safeway.
Portola Branch Library
Portola Branch Library is in the center of the neighborhood and offers workshops, activities for kids and exhibitions for all ages. Music and movies are part of the library's inventory, too, and the library staff posts seasonal rotations of both alongside reading lists.
San Francisco Unified School District
The area is served by the San Francisco Unified School District, which has an A rating on Niche. Edward R. Taylor Elementary has a B-plus rating and Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Middle School has a B-minus rating. Phillip and Sala Burton Academic High School has an A-minus rating, and a variety of extracurricular activities for students, like movie, Mandarin and literature clubs.
Trails, golf and music at McLaren Park
Portola’s southwest side brushes up against McLaren Park. This expansive greenspace has seven miles of walking trails, along with multi-purpose sports courts and scenic overlooks. The Jerry Garcia Amphitheater hosts year-round musical acts, and a there’s a municipal 9-hole golf course called Gleaneagles GC that’s been called a “refuge from the city’s crowds and costs” by Golf Magazine. The Palega Recreation Center is in the heart of Portola and has open gym hours for basketball, a ping-pong area and outdoor recreation areas for soccer, tennis and baseball.
Getting around Portola
The San Jose Avenue MUNI Line is about two miles from the neighborhood, along with the neighboring Glen Park Bay Area Rapid Transit Station. Route 101 provides access around San Francisco and beyond and leads to the San Francisco International Airport, about 10 miles away.
