Grab a spot to sit by the Bay

Sausalito is a city with the type of dreamy ambiance that inspired a hit — it’s where Otis Redding formulated what became his biggest song: “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.” And today, sitting right by the water in this bayside community is still a great way to pass the time. This is a community just north of San Francisco that’s known for its views and for its outdoor recreation opportunities, benefits of its location on the coast. “It’s a unique charming seaside town,” says local Realtor Mark Rushford of Coldwell Banker Realty. “We have a variety of restaurants and a number of nice parks and recreational areas. And we’re amazingly well located. Close to San Francisco by car or ferry. And really centrally located for all things Bay Area.”

A waterside retreat is as simple as a walk down the street

The entire east side of Sausalito is a coastline, facing Richardson Bay. So the full stretch is lined with yacht harbors, parks and beaches. Gabrielson Park is among the bayside spots locals can enjoy, one where it’s not uncommon to find people sitting out on the grass or on one of the benches, soaking in the view of the water and of Belvedere Island across the way. After perhaps enjoying a picnic at Gabrielson, locals can get up and go for a stroll up to Schoonmaker Beach to put their feet in the sand. Or those with kids can head slightly inland to the Robin Sweeny Park Playground. Those looking for more adventure will feel at home in Sausalito, too — outdoor sports are a big deal here, says Rushford, a Sausalito resident. Sailing and watersports are popular, Rushford says, as is hiking and mountain biking in the nearby Marin Headlands. The Marin Headlands stretch more than 2,000 acres and have miles upon miles of trails.

Homes here come perched in the hills

Sausalito’s residential streets are a labyrinth of paths winding around the city’s rolling hills. That means many homes here come with the benefit of views of the nearby bay. The homes themselves are a diverse mix, built across a wide timeline of eras and including examples of a wide range of styles, from Georgian to contemporary. “Everything is so unique here,” Rushford says. “It ranges from the late 1800s, to the absolutely modern, redone.” Houses around Sausalito tend to be sizable, too, stretching around 2,200 square feet on average. Lots here tend to be compact, under one-fifth of an acre, but many streets are walkable, lined with sidewalks that can help locals take in more of the sights. A smattering of townhomes and condos are mixed in with the single-family houses here, and a lot of those were built in the 1970s. There are also some floating homes in Sausalito, including at Waldo Point Harbor, where Otis Redding worked on “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.” Prices in Sausalito start in the $500,000s for some of the condos and can rise to more than $4 million for some of the bigger single-family homes.

Community fun comes easy in Sausalito

Sausalito is home to a regular drumbeat of community events, over the course of the year. The list ranges from an Easter Egg Hunt and Parade, which has been in place for more than 40 years and features live music, to a Breakfast with Santa event at the Sausalito Yacht Club. There’s also a recurring Jazz and Blues by the Bay concert series on weekends from June to September.

Dine just fine in Sausalito

Sausalito’s residential and recreation spaces mix seamlessly with an assortment of dining options. “There’s a nice offering around here,” Rushford says. Many of the restaurants are along the thoroughfares of Bridgeway or Caledonia Street, many of which are right along the water. Osteria Divino is one of the popular spots on Caledonia, an Italian restaurant known in part for its live jazz. Angelino, on Bridgeway, is another great spot, Rushford says. The linguine with clams is a standout here. Or locals can pick up groceries to cook at home from Mollie Stone's Markets, a family-owned store with a standout produce section. There’s also a Target in Sausalito, in the Marin Gateway Shopping Center.

School options come with variety

Public school options for students in Sausalito include the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academy, which is part of the Sausalito Marin City School District and has a C-minus overall grade on Niche. The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academy has two campuses: the Nevada Campus on Nevada Street with kindergarten to fifth grade and the Phillips Campus on Phillips Drive with grades 6 to 8. Students at both campuses can take advantage of garden learning, for hands-on instruction in everything from science to math. Then they could progress to the A-plus-rated Tamalpais High School, which has an Applied Technology department with programs in automotive technology, computer programming, architectural design and engineering. Sausalito also has multiple private schools, including one of three campuses for Lycée Français de San Francisco, an international institution with an A-plus rating.

Move around with Marin Transport

The Marin Transport bus system covers Sausalito and has 13 local routes around Marin County. There are several Marin Transport stops along Bridgeway. Commuters can also take the ferry from the coast to San Francisco, or drive to San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge, a trip of just about 10 miles.
