Skyland Terrace-Greenway Park
Suburban Neighborhood in Savannah, Georgia
Chatham County 31406
Midcentury ranch-style homes complement modern townhouses
Apartments, townhouses and condo communities make up most of the neighborhood’s north side, offering opportunities for both renting and buying. Two- and three-bedroom units range from about $175,000 to just under $300,000. In the center of the neighborhood, single-family ranch-style homes built between 1950 and 1980 vary drastically in color and design but tend to remain stable in the $250,000 to $350,000 price range. The roads may lack sidewalks, but they do feature streetlights for an added safety measure, and Nix-Miller says there’s an active neighborhood watch here that helps deter crime. “It’s a good neighborhood to get comfortable in. You have people looking out for people,” she says. The community earns a CAP Index crime score of 5 out of 10, just above the national average.
No shortage of activities at Lake Mayer Park
The 75-acre Lake Mayer Park includes courts for tennis, pickleball and basketball, as well as a grassy baseball field. Skaters can practice their latest trick at the skatepark or join their neighbors at the inline hockey rink for a pick-up game. The sprawling playground is popular among local kids, while the Phil Hurd Raceway invites remote-control car enthusiasts to bring their latest model for a spin. A paved trail surrounds the lake, giving walkers and joggers a great view of local anglers casting lines from the dock. There’s no swimming allowed here, though, so many locals head to the Chatham County Aquatic Center for a dip. The Jennifer Ross Soccer Complex and Guy Minick Youth Complex accommodate local sports leagues, while nearby Bacon Park is beloved for its golf course. And there’s no green thumb required to enjoy the displays at the 10-acre Savannah Botanical Gardens.
Study engineering at Jenkins High
As part of Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools, most students will attend White Bluff Elementary, which receives a grade of C-plus on Niche. After attending Myers Middle, which scores a C-minus, students can move on to Jenkins High. This B-plus-rated school is known for its rigorous School of Engineering, a program that’s STEM Certified by The Georgia Department of Education. Male high school students can enroll in the private, A-rated Benedictine Military Academy, while those seeking faith-based education often turn to St. James Catholic School. Some students may continue their education at South University, which sits just off Waters Avenue.Celebrate the city with events at Lake Mayer and Forsyth parks
Residents are a short drive or bus ride away from some of the city’s biggest events. Lake Mayer Park hosts the Savannah Camellia Festival in February, which kicks off with a 5K around the lake. Downtown Savannah's Forsyth Park hums with activity during annual traditions such as the Savannah Jazz Festival and the SCAD Sidewalk Arts Festival.
Commuting is easy with Truman Parkway and CAT buses
Access to both Abercorn Street and Truman Parkway makes it easy to drive the 8 miles north to downtown Savannah. The parkway connects commuters with Interstate 516, which runs north of Hunter Army Airfield toward westbound Interstate 16. Chatham Area Transit is another resource for daily trips, with a handful of bus stops along East Montgomery Cross Road and Mall Boulevard.Big brands on Abercorn Street and local favorites on Waters Avenue
The community is surrounded by big box stores, hole-in-the-wall comic shops, local florists and essential businesses like salons and banks. Oglethorpe Mall has the largest footprint, with more than 100 storefronts and an international food court. Driving up Abercorn Street reveals major names such as Kohl’s, Burlington and Best Buy, along with a host of casual restaurants like Buffalo Wild Wings, Zaxby’s and Waffle House. But despite the convenience of these chains, Nix-Miller says local spots like Carey Hilliard’s Restaurant draw the most attention. "People who are from here that move away, when they come back, the first thing they want to do is go to Carey Hilliard's and get the shrimp,” Nix-Miller says. The restaurant’s popularity dates back to the 1970s, and the dining room retains a rustic vibe with wood accents. For groceries, residents can visit Kroger, Food Lion and the local Uncle Ben’s Jr. Meat Market.
