Jefferson-Houston PreK-8 IB is an award-winning school located on the west side of Alexandria's Old Town. It is an International Baccalaureate World School using an inquiry-based and student-centered teaching approach. Jefferson-Houston PreK-8 IB is also an Advancement Via Individual Determination, or AVID, school, using a support program to prepare students for college. The school also has educational opportunities for talented and gifted children. Special education students and English language learners also have programs to align with their individual needs. As a Jefferson-Houston Jaguar, children will learn lessons beyond what is covered in a textbook. Students can participate in an array of programs such as book buddies, environmental club and Student Government Association. The school hosts numerous events throughout the year, including a Winter Concert consisting of the school's orchestra, band, and chorus. There is also the Hour of Code event, a national program that empowers students to learn about computer science. Teachers encourage and recognize those who are respectful, responsible, safe, and exhibit their personal best. Every month there is a special event to honor the students who have demonstrated the four positive behavioral interventions and supports, known as PBIS, expectations.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

Nice teachers and community. However academically not a challenge even in the talented and gifted program. We moved on to a different school system entirely and grateful that we did. An entirely different league at our school. If you want nice go to Jefferson Houston and if you want nice and an academically challenging program move out of ACPS.

We moved from Orange County in California and we are overwhelmingly pleased with Jefferson Houston. We see our children thriving. The principal knows and greets all students by their first name! The classes are small allowing teachers to give attentive care. The electives are once a week! In Califor...

I was nervous in general about sending my daughter to school but JH has really helped. The teachers have really helped her adjust to a big school and new environment. They are really responsive to our concerns and have encouraged my daughter to blossom. I love the diversity and friendliness of every...

My older one is well above grade level in reading and math, and is in TAG for both. My younger one is excelling in reading and math - when he first started kindergarten, he re...

Not an academically competitive school at all. Our bar is set high for our child. We sold our big home and relocated to a smaller home in a different city and never looked back. The sacrifice all worth it.
