Johns Elementary School is a school off Sherry Street in east Arlington. The school is part of the Arlington Independent School District and serves prekindergarten through sixth grade students. Johns Elementary School is named after Gertrude Johns, a former Arlington educator. Gertrude Johns graduated from Texas State University, earning her bachelor's and master's degrees. She then went on to teach civics and sociology at Arlington High School. She said, "Work hard while you work, and play while you play." Several opportunities exist for parents to get involved at the school. They can become active Parent Teacher Association members and volunteer throughout the year. There’s also the Johns Dads Club, which encourages father figures to be more active in their student's education. In addition to courses in core subjects, students learn Science Technology Engineering and Math. There are two learning labs and a fine arts program where students have the option to take electives like engineering, art, music classes, and math. Instrument rentals such as brass, string, and percussion kits are available for students participating in the Johns Band. The school mascot is a jaguar; the students are often called the Johns Jags.
