Stephen F. Austin High School is a true institution, more than 130 years old, with deep traditions and a strong sense of school pride. The school has relocated seven times since the original campus opened its doors in 1881. Austin High is said to be one of the oldest public high schools west of the Mississippi, and one of the very first in the state of Texas. Located near downtown Austin along the Colorado River, Austin High boasts roughly 2,300 students in ninth through 12th grades. Because the campus is bordered by the river to the south and a controlled-access stretch of Cesar Chavez Street to the north, the school grounds feel secluded, like a suburban academic oasis in the middle of the city. The list of notable alumni is long and varied, from sports legends Ben Crenshaw and Don Baylor to local guitar heroes Gary Clark Jr. and Shakey Graves. Former first daughters Barbara and Jenna Bush are also graduates of Austin High School. More than 350 National Merit Semifinalists have matriculated here, and Austin High School is known for a strong college-prep curriculum. The school has renowned athletic programs and facilities. Students can also choose to participate in extracurricular activities such as world-class fine arts and music programs, the Red Dragon Players theater company, multicultural clubs and Model UN, and a student culinary society.

I think overall it is a fine school. There are a lot of good teachers that care about what they do and care about making sure the students are prepared for AP tests, college, etc, but the admins are not involved. I hardly know my counselor and they don't care about different programs or to listen to teachers (especially elective teachers). It's really frustrating and I wish it felt like there was more of a community and each student had more of a support system at school.

out of all three high schools i have been to Austin high has felt the most inclusive and the most welcoming space. At Austin high i want to be there and the environment provides that, with the security guards greeting you each morning to the widely ranging groups of people.

My overall experience was good. This school had helped me grow my mindset and make good decisions. I barely had any bad experiences here.

A few safety issues. For a long period of time the front door was unlocked at all times, the lock did not work. My main concern is that it is well known that random people not attending the school can come in and walk around for hours without being noticed by staff. I attended for four years and the...

The administration at Austin High refuses to take responsibility when they make mistakes and send a teenager into a suicidal crisis. Their anti-bullying policies are in place to protect the administration, rather than the students it is meant to protect. The school PTA is led by privileged tarry tow...
