Turn almost any corner in Doss Elementary School and you just might find a pair of large, perfectly round eyes staring right at you—owl eyes. That’s because owls in every size and color adorn the halls of this brand-new campus. Leona Doss, the beloved Austin teacher and the school’s namesake, often painted owls, so they became Doss’ mascot. When a state-of-the-art renovation was planned for the campus, designers looked to Ms. Doss’ owls for inspiration. The result was a “treehouse-themed” marvel, filled with colorful nooks and crannies, breakout seating, movable glass walls and a whimsical, spiral staircase. Even the playground is forward-thinking—it doubles as a public community green space. Doss Elementary isn’t just known for its unique architecture. It has been recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School for consistent strong academic performance and high test scores. As one of a select number of culture-focused, public Austin independent school districts, Doss offers a dual-language immersion program. Students may take classes in both English and Mandarin Chinese, beginning in kindergarten. They continue their study of world cultures by focusing on Spanish, German, French, and Latin in subsequent years. Afterschool activities are available daily and include private music lessons, tutoring, karate, cooking, sewing, chess, art, robotics and more. Northwest Hills parents will appreciate the academic achievements of Doss, and the numerous opportunities for enrichment. For students, school in a “treehouse” surrounded by brightly colored owls is sure to be an experience to remember.

Doss was a great school for our kids until 3rd grade. By 5th grade it felt like a public school in an extremely under funded area. In 5th my son basically leaned nothing. For example he was taught the water table for the 2nd time and went through the same math class He did in 4th grade. He witnessed...

Happy, positive climate. This school teaches so much more than the basics, and there are plenty of optional clubs, contests, and after school activities. The teachers are nothing short of phenomenal and most are very experienced--- and fun and kind to boot. Lots of opportunities for parents to be in...

This school WAS great! However, with the current administration 14 teachers left at the end of 20\21 school year. Hmmmm.....Mass exodus.
