Many people from Austin still fondly remember their time as Matadors—or “Mats”—as students at Murchison Middle School are known. The school opened in 1967 and has been welcoming sixth through eighth graders almost since the neighborhood was founded. The school, like the city around it, has grown and changed in the intervening years. Officials recently cut the ribbon on a three-story addition and ultra-modern library. The campus is also now home to a wildlife habitat and community garden. Murchison is Austin’s only Middle Years World School and one of a global network of International Baccalaureate programs. Languages are a core subject. Chinese and Vietnamese language immersion are offered in continuation of programs begun at the elementary level. Other students may choose French, German, Spanish or Latin. Students take part in championship athletics including swimming and diving, a nationally recognized robotics team and an award-winning fine arts program. Murchison also partners with Project Lead the Way, a national STEM curriculum which engages learners through hands-on projects that integrate technology, engineering, math and biomedical science. All eighth-grade students complete a community service project. Afterschool hours are devoted to clubs ranging from common-interest themed pursuits such as anime and art club to foreign language clubs and Honor Society. Budding writers can contribute to El Matador, the school’s newspaper. Some are just pure fun—think ultimate frisbee. Perhaps the reason students don’t soon forget their years at Murchison is best declared in the words of the Matador motto: “Inspiration within, excellence throughout.”

I really like this school overall there are problems for sure but most of them are not that bad and compared to other schools Murchison does a good job educating kids so i would say this school is just what you will need for middle school.

I liked Murchison Middle school. The variety of classes was extensive and accommodating. As a student with a 504 plan I found that Murchison teachers and staff were helpful on this front. I think that the French program there is exceptional and amazing.

Murchison Middle School is an incredibly unwelcoming school with no interest in communicating with families or involving them in their child's learning experience. It is actually the policy of teachers to not communciate with parents - my 6th grader was told, multiple times, "We don't believe in ema...

The new principal is outstanding. Despite the pandemic, our child has had a wonderful time at Murchison. The campus is far better inside and out than 3 years ago.

It's generally just great, the only problems are the Cliques. The VRC team is also world-class, and has two teams in Regionals.
