Zilker Elementary School, located off Bluebonnet Lane, was the first public elementary school built in Austin after World War II and serves students from prekindergarten through fifth grade. The elementary school opened in January of 1950 and is named after Andrew J. Zilker, who wanted to provide the neighborhood with a good school for students. Zilker Elementary School’s mission is to help children become lifelong learners by surrounding students with a creative yet cooperative environment. Students at Zilker Elementary School thrive in the academic environment as the faculty use various effective teaching methods. The school offers programs such as Spanish Immersion, Special Education, Math Co-op, enrichment classes and after-school care. Students can choose to join programs and participate in clubs such as chess, LEGO engineering, piano, cooking and much more. The Dual Language Program allows students to learn math, science and Spanish literacy during their day at school. Half of their day is filled with Spanish-speaking curricula, and the other half is in English. The school serves over 500 students and has a student-teacher ratio of 14-to-1.

Such a wonderful school with the most thoughtful and engaged teachers. We feel very lucky to be in the district and have had two children go through. Horrible teachers who hate kids they finally just fired the teacher who cracked some kids skull open the old art teacher everyone complained for her laying her hand on children it took them like 20 years to fire her
