Founded in 1977, the Awakening Seed School is nonprofit private school that helps children in pre-kindergarten through fourth grade grow in a welcoming atmosphere, with students ranging from 12 months to 10 years old.
With a mission to create a learning environment where everyone respects one another, Awakening Seed celebrates diversity and individuality and therefore does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender identity, sexual orientation, or national or ethnic origin. The faculty and staff here are committed to nurturing loving kindness and compassion in all of their students.
Although the school primarily follows a STEAM curriculum (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) that revolves around inquiry and project-based learning, the instruction also integrates an emergent curriculum that organically evolves to include lessons that might expand or deepen learning. Students can also build a deeper sense of community in smaller learning groups and classes that include peers in different grade levels.
Lovingly called a hippie school by its founders, Awakening Seed also starts each school year with an annual Tie-Dye Day in autumn where staff, students, and loved ones come together to tie-dye shirts and enjoy other artistic activities as a fun way to meet and learn about one another.
True to its school song, Awakening Seed welcomes all to “celebrate love on Planet Earth [and] live your life for all it’s worth.”
