Charleston Progressive Academy is a public magnet school that proudly serves close to 300 students from pre-kindergarten to fifth grade. With small class sizes and a focused curriculum, students receive a hands-on education from experienced and passionate teachers. The school was founded by two retired Charleston County teachers in 1997 when they saw a need to serve the hardworking students in their community, and teachers and staff today still hold true to those founding values. Although the campus has grown significantly over the years, Charleston Progressive Academy was originally housed in the historic Courtenay Building near Wragg Mall, and returned to the building in 2013 after significant renovations of the facility. This magnet school focuses on leadership, and teachers set personal mastery and responsibility as top priorities for students at Charleston Progressive Academy. Enrollment is decided through a lottery system where students in Charleston County apply and are selected to attend the school. However, there are certain enrollment priorities like having a sibling who is already enrolled at the school. Special events throughout the year include the fifth grade photography project, Literacy Week and Red Ribbon Week. Students and faculty also dedicate a considerable amount time and effort into clubs and community events to promote personal leadership. Located at the north end of the Mazyck-Wraggborough neighborhood, the campus is centrally located less than two miles from Gadsdenboro Park, Liberty Square and the heart of Charleston.
