The Edward K. Duke Ellington Elementary School (Duke Ellington Elementary) at 243 N. Parkside Avenue enrolls around 500 students in preschool through eighth grades in the Austin neighborhood on Chicago’s West Side. Edward Kennedy Duke Ellington, the school's namesake, was a prolific American jazz musician and band leader during the early 1900s whose work still influences artists today. Famous for his appearances at the Cotton Club in Harlem, Duke Ellington remains an iconic historical figure and a fitting inspiration for students engaged in pursuing their passions and dreams at Duke Ellington Elementary. Teachers at Duke Ellington Elementary encourage children to "listen, learn and lead," and the school offers an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) that stresses language, literacy and global thinking. As IBMYP degree candidates, students learn at least two languages, participate in community service projects and demonstrate proficiency in eight subject groups. Preparing students for high school and college careers, Duke Ellington Elementary maintains a "rigorous academic, social, and technological" curriculum that encourages students to become skilled communicators, independent thinkers and lifelong learners. Inside the school, even the stairs are painted with large, encouraging messages that students can read with every step. Soaring inside and outside the classroom, Duke Ellington Elementary’s Eagles learn valuable lessons in confidence, collaboration and personal excellence.
