Built in 1927, John Hay Community Academy's beautiful brick-and-stone building on North Laramie Avenue houses Austin's preschool through eighth grade students. Enrolling about 300 students, the John Hay Community Academy serves Chicago's West Side with a neighborhood garden, public art, a U-10 certified soccer field and environmentally friendly low-emission lighting and technology. John Hay Community Academy combines courses in the sciences, math and reading with studies in the arts and humanities. Students can also participate in band, ceramics, guitar, music theory, painting, photography, theater and art history to enhance their academic experiences. The school's athletic teams play to win in basketball, football, soccer and volleyball. John Hay Community Academy also partners with the University of Illinois-Chicago and nonprofit organizations like Small Bites, Gardeneers, and Changing Worlds to bring students extracurricular activities. Recognized by Chicago Public Schools as a certified Level One-Excelling Creative School, John Hay is also a 21st Century Community School committed to mentoring students with after-school tutoring in literacy and math.
