Higgins Community Academy Elementary School is named after Thomas J. Higgins, who joined the 99th Illinois Infantry as a Union Army soldier during the American Civil War. Higgins was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery at the Battle of Vicksburg. Today, the school's namesake represents the courage and integrity of its students and Warriors. The school is on South Morgan Street. It serves prekindergarten through eighth-grade students as part of the Chicago Public Schools system on the city's far South Side. The Higgins Community Academy integrates reading, math, science and social studies with technology to promote a curriculum that encourages students to reach their goals. Higgins Community Academy's Fine and Performing Arts program includes partnerships with major Chicago cultural institutions like the Joffrey Ballet, Chicago Children's Choir and Beverly Arts Center.
