A Chicago Public Schools campus located in the Wicker Park neighborhood, Jose De Diego Community Academy serves over 450 students from pre-K through 8th grade. The school opened in 1982 and is named after Puerto Rican statesman and author Jose de Diego, who is honored for his contributions to literature and advocacy for Puerto Rican independence. The school’s historic home was built in the late 19th century, housing two large high schools before switching to an elementary curriculum in the 1980s.
De Diego Elementary invests in fostering a 21st century curriculum with an emphasis on inclusivity. Programs include tutoring in language arts and mathematics. Students can participate in extracurricular activities, including intramural athletics, art club, choir, band, drama and a book club. Yearly events include an art fair, a science fair and a back-to-school barbecue.
De Diego Academy seeks to involve all school personnel, students, parents and community members as partners in the continuous process of reading, mathematics and technological improvement.

I attended this school from preschool all the way to eighth grade. I can honestly say that there is nothing negative to say. The teachers were very knowledgeable about their subjects and taught the students very well, they cared about their students success, the staff was amazing, and the after-school programs were always fun and interesting.
