Part of the Chicago Public School district, the McNair School of Excellence enrolls preschool through eighth grade students. The school is named for physicist and NASA astronaut, Ronald Ervin McNair, who died in 1986 when the space shuttle Challenger was destroyed in flight. First opened in 1998 in a church building, the McNair School of Excellence has been in its current location in 2003. The school now has a facility with 44 classrooms and a student population of about 400, according to its website. The McNair School of Excellence supports its curriculum with both Compass and Study Island software that allows for individualized learning, instruction and assessment. Team sports like baseball, soccer, basketball, and cheerleading improve physical health and collaboration skills. After-school programs and extracurricular activities include varied offerings, including ballet and hip-hop dance groups, art and drawing clubs, and chess and Lego teams.
