Columbus Spanish Immersion Academy was founded in 1987 to help children from prekindergarten through fifth grade develop the necessary skills to become bilingual and biliterate.
The school sits on the northern end of the city’s North Linden neighborhood, and Columbus City Schools District lottery procedure determines enrollment eligibility for its youngest students.
Between grades two and five, a review panel evaluates the Spanish and English fluency of any potential incoming students to ensure their ability to thrive in the school’s unique environment.
In addition to the standard district curriculum, all students take part in the school’s language immersion program. Beginning in kindergarten, 80% of the child’s educational experience is conducted in Spanish.
This heavy emphasis on the Spanish language in their early years supports the transition to an even split of Spanish and English fluency and instruction by third grade.
Students engage with native speakers of both Spanish and English languages throughout their time at Columbus Spanish Immersion Academy, including while participating in fun activities here such as the Spring Cultural Festival, seed program, and classroom safari. Fourth and fifth grade students are offered instrumental music and choir.
Columbus Spanish Immersion Academy’s main objective is for each student to achieve a level of Spanish fluency that allows them to actively grow their skills in middle school, high school and beyond. The learning experience also fosters awareness, knowledge and acceptance of different cultures.
