Farrell B. Howell opened its doors in 2006 and over a decade later, it continues to promote leadership and love of learning for students through the eighth grade. Named for a Denver area educator who left behind an exceptional legacy, Farrell B. Howell is the only Montbello school to utilize the Leader in Me evidence-based approach. The school recently announced they now offer dual language classes through the fifth grade. The school is home to over six hundred students with a student to teacher ratio of 15:1. Though its math and reading proficiency scores rank below the state average, Farrell B. Howell continues to see improvement in its scores and in student engagement. Programs like Expeditionary Learning for students in kindergarten through fifth grades, and the Connected Mathematics Project for grades six through eight aim to develop students’ skills and deepen their understanding of the topic. The campus is modern and welcoming. The school is directly across from Village Place Park, and the outdoor recreation space echoes a park-like feel with two playgrounds, a whimsical basketball court, and shaded picnic benches. Near the front entrance, there is a creative seating area with decorative boulders and an abstract sculpture. Farrell B. Howell welcomes community and family involvement in keeping with the school motto: “A Family That Grows Leaders”.

I love the fact that my child is required to wear school uniforms, takes gangs colors, social class distinction out of the picture. Creates more room to support learning and safety. They assign daily homework which needs to be turned weekly. Great way to involve parents with our childrens' education...
