Martin Luther King Leadership Academy is a public school located at 645 Logan St. SE in Grand Rapids, Michigan, approximately one mile north of the Madison Area neighborhood. This school launched in 2005 and has 325 students enrolled with a 14-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio. A recent remodel provided the school with state-of-the-art classrooms and collaborative spaces, including a moderately cognitively impaired classroom for students in preschool through eighth grade. Focus at this school is on academic growth, and it also encourages students to thrive as citizens through behavioral and social coaching in the classroom. The MLK Garden at Martin Luther King Leadership Academy provides students with the opportunity to grow a variety of vegetables to be shared with the community. The students are given the responsibility of weeding, pruning and watering the plants as part of their daily tasks, allowing them to take part in giving back to the community.
