The Hopkins Grammar School was founded in 1660 in a one-room building on the New Haven Green and moved to its present location in Westville in 1926. Located on a 108-acre campus surrounded by quiet residential neighborhoods and the Yale Golf Course and Athletic Fields, Hopkins is an independent and gender-inclusive day school of 710 students in grades seven through 12. Hopkins offers unique alternative academic options through its Semester Away programs, where students learn on different school campuses. The School Year Abroad program allows students to spend a year in another country, and the Global Learning Program connects student communities abroad through email and video, allowing them to meet in person during a school break. For extracurricular interests, there are 35 service clubs and over 75 activity clubs that include interesting topics from Italian cooking and ping pong to a Math Team and Mental Health Awareness group. Hopkins is also home to the Adam Kreiger Adventure Program, a state-of-the-art challenge course honoring alumnus Adam Kreiger’s passion for exploration and the outdoors, even after he received a terminal diagnosis of bone cancer. Hopkins awards over 180 financial aid packages each year, and students consistently place among the nation’s top ten percent of students in standardized testing. The school was voted the No. 1 Best Day School in Connecticut in 2022 by Niche and is an excellent place for students to challenge themselves physically and academically.

Most faculties are mediocre at best, lacking passion and genuine care of the students. The school administration cares more about the face than the substance and advancement of the students. The ranking has slipped over the recent years for a reason. If you have decent public schools in your town, don't waste money here. Not worth it.

Hopkins was a fantstic High School and does a lot to support students during all four years while setting them up to support themselves later in College.

The school is not magical. Many of the kids who go to Ivy League schools are already connected as legacies or children of faculty. Don't expect support if you are a student with disabilities and don't expected to be treated fairly if you aren't white. It is your typical New England prep school except it hasn't progressed in 100 years like many others.

The athletic department is horrible. The coaches have their own sports club so when they lead varsity practice, they invite the families who paid their sports club with siblings from other schools to join, siblings were too young for 7th grade at Hopkins but were allowed to join Hopkins varsity prac...

The Hopkins experience is an exercise in patience. While Hopkins boasts excellent academic opportunities, they are buried beneath domineering teachers who assign endless busywork without accessible channels to give feedback. At the same time, the hostile social environment encourages students not to...

Great experience this year. It was difficult with a hybrid learning environment but Hopkins did a fantastic job.

It's a difficult question. Hopkins has the potential to be a fabulous place. It's an incredible community of engaged, diverse, curious learners. The classes are small and there are many fabulous, committed teachers. The academic grind, however, is intense and relentless, and leaves no room for the p...
