Named after one of the founding trustees of what became known as the Alief Independent School District, Sylvester Boone Elementary School was opened in 1969. Home of the Boone Bears, the school enrolls about 800 students in pre-kindergarten through fourth grade.
Overall, Boone Elementary students are doing about as well as their Texas peers; however, students here are making better progress than average. The student-to-teacher ratio of 13-to-1 is also a bit better than the Texas average of 15-to-1, ensuring that students will have ample opportunity to receive individualized attention from teachers if necessary.
Like all Alief schools, Boone now has a full-day pre-kindergarten program. Free to students who qualify, the pre-kindergarten program is also available to other district parents, guardians and Alief teachers.
Boone is one of the schools participating in the district's Children Interacting Afterschool program. Open to pre-kindergarten through fourth grade students, the free grant-funded program provides supervised activities for several hours after the school day ends. The program starts with a snack social, moves on to homework lab and ends with fun, hands-on activities. Students interact with community members and develop academic, physical and social skills.
