The nearly 700 Chargers dream big and work hard at Chambers Elementary School. Located at 10700 Carvel Lane, the school educates students from pre-kindergarten to fifth grade. Opened in 1971, Velma Chambers Elementary School is named for one of the original teachers in the Alief Independent School District. Beginning in 1949, Ms. Chambers taught and served briefly as a principal and superintendent. Missing direct student contact, she returned to teaching. By the time she retired in 1966, the district was growing exponentially with the construction of the Southwest Freeway, which linked the previously rural area to the city of Houston. Many Chambers students are enrolled in bilingual or English as a Second Language programs and are making exceptional progress toward reaching academic goals. The school’s afterschool program, Children Interacting After School, helps pupils reach academic, physical, social and emotional goals. Best known as CIA, the free, grant-funded program serves students from first grade on up. It begins with a snack time which gives students a chance to eat, unwind and chat with their friends. After that, they receive help with homework and engage in various fun activities.
