Named after the husband-and-wife team of Robert and Helen Cummings, who served the Alief students and community in numerous ways, Cummings Elementary School sits at 10455 S. Kirkwood Rd. and enrolls about 550 students in pre-kindergarten through fourth grade. The nearly 600 Cardinals follow the school’s motto, giving nothing less than their best in all that they do.
Students at Cummings are making above-average academic progress, striving to improve daily. One advantage the school boasts is its remarkable faculty. The teachers here are typically more experienced than elsewhere in Texas, and the student-to-teacher ratio of 12-to-1 compares favorably with the Texas average of 15-to-1. This ensures that students at Cummings are able to receive individualized attention if needed.
Cummings is one of the venues for Children Interacting Afterschool. Better known as CIA, this grant-funded enrichment program is free to parents and guardians. Starting from first grade, CIA offers students additional social, emotional, physical and academic opportunities for several hours after the school bell rings.
Since everything improves when you've had a chance to eat and unwind with your friends, CIA always starts with snacks before students receive help with their homework and participate in different activities. Cummings students love love arts and crafts, gym time and learning about coding and technology.
