Something special is blooming at Youngblood Intermediate School at 8410 Dairy View Lane: community gardens at the 22-acre Alief SPARK Park & Nature Center across the street. The park provides tranquil, soul-nourishing views and recreational opportunities for Youngblood’s 1000 5th- and 6th-grade Wildcats. The community gardens also offer fantastic learning and service-oriented leadership opportunities for STEM Academy students. The STEM Academy—which stands for science, technology, engineering, and math—is open to all students who meet academic requirements. There's usually more demand than supply, so an open lottery chooses students. Beside working with community farmers, STEM academy students do 3-D printing, robotics, coding, forensics, and engineering projects. All Youngblood Wildcats are performing as well as their state counterparts on standardized tests. They're making more academic progress than others in the state, though. Students can choose from several before-, after-, or during school activities. One sought-after activity is creating and editing video content for the Wildcat Pride Broadcasting Network, which produces the morning announcements and motivational spots that run throughout the day. Other extracurriculars include football, volleyball, soccer, basketball, and the Angels Dance Team and coding and knitting clubs.
