Hubbell Elementary School in the Roosevelt Cultural District serves more than 400 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. The school draws from five Des Moines neighborhoods, including Waveland Park. Part of the Des Moines Public Schools district, Hubbell Elementary has been a community landmark since it opened in 1911.
The school is situated next to Theodore Roosevelt High School and across 42nd Street from the Des Moines Playhouse Theatre and the Shops at Roosevelt. A portion of the recreational Waveland Trail, which connects three historic neighborhoods and a host of area amenities, runs along Hubbell’s campus, adding to its significance as a community hub.
While retaining many of its original features, the school building and exterior recreation areas were largely renovated in the early 2000s. In 2007, additional funding made way for a new cafeteria, gym and classrooms.
Hubbell is one of only a few elementary schools in Des Moines to offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB/PYP). Integral to IB/PYP, students are encouraged to ask questions, research, collaborate and think critically with an international perspective.
In addition to its academic curriculum, which follows the Iowa Core Curriculum Standards, Hubbell offers a garden club, Lego club and Book Buddies, as well as band, orchestra and chorus. Students may also take art, theater and dance classes in cooperation with the Des Moines Social Club.

Hubbell is the first International Baccelaureate Elementary School in the State of Iowa. The teachers care to improve the skills and efforts of their students. Tim Schott is the greatest Principal who is engaged with his students, motivating for his staff, and a wonderful family man.
