When it’s time for school, Irmo Elementary students know just where to Bee. As the “Home of the Yellow Jackets,” the halls of this historic education center are always buzzing with activity. But it’s not all pun and games. The Hive, as they fondly call the school, is also a place for learning. Irmo Elementary School began in 1935 as a Depression-era public works project under President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal. When the two-story red brick building was constructed, it was the first centrally heated building in Irmo. The nearby athletic field was built by hand using shovels and wheelbarrows. Over the years, the building has had many upgrades but it’s still in use. As the student body grew, so did the school, and today it is about three times its original size. Serving students in kindergarten through fifth grades, the school provides a curriculum rich in language arts, math, social studies, science, art, physical education and music. When the afternoon bell rings, some busy bees stay on for the Afternoon Safari after-school program, operated by the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission. The program provides a mix of reading, games, arts & crafts, physical activity, homework time and character-building activities.
