School spirit and community engagement contribute to Duncan U. Fletcher Middle School’s positive academic environment. The middle school is located on 3rd Street North and serves around 1,300 students from grades six through eight. The school’s STEM program helps pupils succeed in science, technology, engineering and math as they prepare for high school. The school is named after Duncan Upshaw Fletcher who was Florida’s longest-serving U.S. Senator. As a tribute to Fletcher, students rally around their senators as they engage in team sports and events. Fletcher Middle School has winning teams in swimming and diving, football, basketball, soccer, cheerleading, track and golf. The school often partners with professional sports teams, such as the Jacksonville Sharks indoor football team, to help fundraise and support the athletic programs. Clubs are also an important part of student life and include a wide array of choices such as the Beaches Go Green Club, band, chorus, drama, math, spelling, and robotics to name a few. Throughout the year the school hosts festivals and events including Sprit Night, Movie Night, an Arts Festival and Teacher Appreciation Week. Fletcher Middle School also participates in Jacksonville Beach's famous Deck the Chairs holiday celebration, decorating a lifeguard stand along the beach.
