Originally named Hawthorne Elementary, the school was renamed Bertram Caruthers Elementary in 2002 in honor of Bertram R. Caruthers, who served as principal from 1960 to 1966. Located in the southeastern section of Downtown Kanas City, Kansas, Bertram Caruthers Elementary serves just under 400 students from the surrounding neighborhoods and offers classes from kindergarten to fifth grade.
The school maintains a student-teacher ratio of 18:1, making individualized attention easily accessible for students who might need it. Although test scores for Bertram Caruthers are below the district’s scores, the school has made tremendous academic growth in recent years; in fact, the National Association of ESEA State Program Administrators (NAESPA) recognized Bertram Caruthers Elementary School for exceptional student achievement in 2021. With this recent recognition, the school continues to encourage students to grow academically as well as personally.
Ms. Struzzo, the principal of Bertram Caruthers Elementary, reveals that “student needs are put first at Caruthers … and being selected as an ESEA Distinguished School is a testament to the commitment and hard work that the Caruthers staff displays every day.”
