Douglass Elementary, home of the Dolphins, is a public elementary school in South Central Kansas City, Kansas. The school has just over 250 students from kindergarten to fifth grade. Like the other schools in Kansas City, it has a rich history dating back to the 1880s. Prior to 1887, the Lincoln School was the only African American school in Kansas City and quickly became too small for the growing student body. In September of 1887, the Third Ward School opened its doors as the second African American school in Kansas City. The name was changed to Douglass Elementary a few years later. This name not only honors the famous abolitionist, Frederick Douglass, but also serves as a reminder to the student body to always aim for a richer and fuller life. The student-teacher ratio is 14:1, which is the same as Kansas City School District. This ratio is beneficial, however, as it provides an advantage to those students who find it helpful to receive more individualized attention from their educators. Douglass Elementary School’s mission is to “empower students to create, explore, and reach their true potential.” Boasting such a positive mission, this esteemed institution provides an excellent atmosphere for students seeking to achieve greatness both academically as well as personally.

the school is a good school, but we need more parents involved to make it a better school for our students.... really we can't complain about any problems, unless we ourselves try and do something to help out... join pta it's great, and then of course you will have a voice!!!!

Excellent teachers. Low student to teacher ration, the smaller class sizes make a great learning enviornment. Great school overall
