Granville T. Woods Elementary School is located at 1037 31 Street in Kenner, Louisiana. It serves pre-kindergarten through eighth grade and was named for African-American inventor Granville T. Woods. In his lifetime, Woods was granted over 60 patents for his creations, many of them for electrical subjects, after overcoming a childhood without a formal education. The school strives to provide a modern learning environment where students come to respect themselves and others while building practical and academic skills. One way the school does this is through a program with Jefferson Parish schools, which allows each student a Chromebook or laptop. This helps teach children to use technology responsibly, safely, and for work as well as play. The institution also connects its students to their community and to history by bringing in speakers for the children. G.T. Woods Elementary School works to provide each and every student with the basic skills they need to prepare themselves for college and beyond. It enrolls 300 students and provides transportation to and from campus each day for qualifying pupils. Uniforms are required for all children attending the school.
