Since 2013, Christenberry Elementary School’s kindergarten through sixth-grade students have been active in the Community Schools program. Almost 500 students attend daytime and after school in programs that include tutoring, athletics, STEM and Scouting. The Community Schools strategy seeks to engage community resources and residents to enhance student health, safety and success. Community Schools programs operate day and evening with extra learning options, recreation, adult education, art, psychological help and public services such as health screening. A Site-Steering Committee composed of local school staff, teachers, parents, businesses and other community leaders manages each school’s program. Christenberry offers their students award-winning STEM classes during the school day and enrichment clubs in a wide range of subjects after school. Because Christenberry Recreation Center, one of the Knoxville’s largest recreation facilities, is connected to Christenberry Elementary School, students can easily go directly to after-school programs there. Clubs, exercise and educational programs take place in the full-sized gymnasium, multi-purpose room, outdoor playground and dance studio. The after-school programs are available to Oakwood residents free of charge by Knoxville Parks and Recreation Department. Popular activities include gardening, art, coding, LEGO building, music, Junior Achievement, math and STEM clubs, track club, martial arts, pickleball and table tennis. Christenberry’s building was rebuilt in 1997 on the same site as their original structure and earned an award for its single-story design that blended well with the residential neighborhood. Original features from the first school that were popular with the community such as the sloped roof, brick details, arched entries, vintage lighting and a bay window were retained. A common area provides a gathering space and lunchroom. The beloved Little Theatre harkens back to the original and stays busy with student productions and parent meetings. An outdoor classroom and garden space allows teachers to bring learning out of the classrooms. A new playground for intermediate age students is in the planning stages. Christenberry has earned multiple recognitions from local and state partners because of their enrichment programs and strong growth in student achievement over the last several years. Principal Melissa Johnson acknowledged that the Community School strategy has enhanced parent and community participation which has been a major factor in Christenberry’s success.

Experience with staff has been good. Unfortunately, the experience my child has had with other students has not been good.

I have been so fortunate that my children have attended Christenberry Elementary. While at Christenberry and once they moved to middle and high school, they have scored well on standardized tests like the ACT and TCAPs. More importantly, school staff help students learn to be good citizens and get a...
