The Dr. Paul L. Kelley Volunteer Academy is a non-traditional high school just minutes from downtown Knoxville. The academy is part of the public school system and exists to help students who may struggle with a traditional high school schedule. The academy, which first occupied a suite in the now-demolished Knoxville Center Mall, is named for a longtime Knoxville educator and three-term school board member who made his home in the same neighborhood where the school was relocated in 2018. The school is an “education resource center” that helps students complete credit recovery and allows more flexibility on the pacing of schoolwork so they can graduate. The school’s small size—less than 100 students—and individualized attention helps students obtain their high school diploma even if they have fallen behind at their base school. Alumni of the Volunteer Academy talk about how the non-traditional education model positively impacted their lives, changed their views on education and kept them from dropping out of high school.

GreatSchools Rating
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
