Sarah Moore Greene Magnet Academy (SMGMA) is a global leadership-themed magnet school offering programs related to international issues. Located in East Knoxville, the school is named in recognition of Sarah Moore Greene, one of Knoxville’s most influential civil rights advocates and community leaders. SMGMA offers students unique learning opportunities that foster cultural awareness and leadership skills. Each student at this kindergarten to fifth grade public elementary school participates in a Spanish Exploration Class, receiving a full week of targeted lessons every five to six weeks. In addition, classes meet monthly with the Media Lab Specialist to explore the diversity of world cultures through project-based learning. The Leader In Me program teaches students how to incorporate positive habits into their daily lives. Although test scores at SMGMA are lower than those at some other schools in Knox County, students are making above-average progress as a result of SMGMA teachers and administrators providing excellent support to help achieve academic growth. A smaller class size, with a 14:1 student-to-teacher ratio, ensures all students are given individualized instruction. As its mission statement indicates, this community of empathetic leaders and lifelong learners celebrates a multi-story worldview that allows SMGMA students to excel inside and outside the classroom.

I am a parent and a volunteer new to Sarah Moore Greene this year. Please don't take too much stock in old reviews. I sent my child to this school by choice- we had other options, but after a couple visits, SMG was the clear fit. The deciding factor for me was the culture. Students walk up to you an...

I volunteered at this school in March 2017 through my employer and must say I was amazed at how the principal (which I hear is new this year) is so engaged with the students and called every student that she saw in the hallway as we were going from class to class by name. They smiled back at her, an...

SMG is a joke. The principal is not approachable and her other assistants are condescending to everyone Why would you put your most ineffective admins at this school? We need strong leadership not left overs?

This is my daughter's first year attending and the atmosphere is horrible. I feel bad transferring my daughter to this school. The communication between parents and teachers is horrible. I am currently looking for a way to get her back to her old school Spring Hill.
